Abstract:

Parts 3 and 4 of an 8-part PBS miniseries on the history of oil and how it has affected global politics and the world economy and transformed our century. "The black giant" deals with the Roaring Twenties and the increased need for oil especially with the advent of more cars. Profiles Calouste Gulbenkian who staked his claim on the oil rights for Iraq. "War and oil" talks about the role oil played in World War II including how it affected strategy as well as what the lack of oil did to slow war efforts and eventually lead to the failure of Japan.
