Abstract:

Abstract: The fire service is one of the most trusted professions in the United States, holding a significant role in the safety and security of American communities. Important to maintaining the confidence and faith of the public are fire service leaders that possess strong moral reasoning and ethical leadership character traits. This study adapted prior research of chief financial officers to analyze firefighters in the United States. A sample of 38 career firefighters completed a Defining Issues Test (DIT) to assess moral cognition and an ethical leadership character traits (ELCT) questionnaire. Significant associations of the DIT and ELCT were tested utilizing linear regression and Pearson correlation analysis. Additional evaluation examined the relationship between DIT and rank, tenure and education. Results were not statistically significant, but point to relationships in need of further study.
