Abstract:

Analyzes various aspects and consequences of the spread of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" throughout the world. Its international "career" took off following World War I. Examines the causes of its popularity in Europe, America, and the Arab world. Among the aspects discussed are the promotion of the "Protocols" by the "Times" in London and by Henry Coston in France, the view of mass psychology in the "Protocols", and the role of the conspiracy theory in modern day antisemitism, in demonological anti-Zionism, and in the ideology of the Russian ultra-nationalist organization Pamyat. Argues that Holocaust denial is the logical conclusion of the Jewish conspiracy theory. This edition includes an annotated chronology, from the birth date of Pierre I. Ratchkovski (1850?) to the latest Arabic edition of the "Protocols", published in Egypt in January 2004 (pp. 289-323); an expanded bibliography (pp. 325-382); an appendix entitled "Les 'Protocoles des Sages de Sion' en Grand-Bretagne et aux États-Unis" (pp. 385-417), by Jean-François Moisan, which was published in vol. 2 of "Les Protocoles des Sages de Sion" (1992); and "Documents" (pp. 419-473) containing extracts from the "Protocols" and from Maurice Joly's "Dialogue aux enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu".
