Abstract:

Honen(113-1212) is one of the outstanding figures in history of Pure Land Buddhism. Honen's life long search for spiritual illumination and enlightement lead him through an exhaustive, journey into the Buddist teachings. Having chosen the Pure Land Path and refuge in the Budda of Infinite Light, Amida, Honen made the pioneering move of establishing the excessive practice of the recited nembutsu(senju nambuts). This sparked a revolution in Buddist practice in Japan wich led to the popularization of Buddism amongst the masses and spurred the emergence of other great masters of the time like Dogen, NIchiren, and Shinran, Honen's disciple.
