Abstract:

Series 1 consists almost entirely of issues of an annual newsletter published by the department from 1935 to the present. The set is complete from 1939 to 1980, and from 1983 to 1988. Also included in this series is one research report, published by the department in 1974.

Series 2 includes notes, maps, and records made during and after geological surveys. Most of the material was compiled by George Huntington Williams, professor of mineralogy; some of the work was done for the U.S. Geological Survey.

Series 3 contains diverse material, representing both administrative and teaching responsibilities. The records include correspondence and memoranda on departmental organization and activities, faculty correspondence, course materials, and notices of lectures and excursions.

Series 4 contains various reports on the state of the department. Most of these are comprehensive, dealing with the department's organization, objectives, and needs, but some are more limited in scope.

Series 5 contains a collection of catalogs, most of which are untitled and undated. Much of the material seems to have been compiled in the 1880s or 1890s and used and updated until the 1940s.

Series 6 contains a scrapbook documenting the professional life of Professor George Huntington Williams, as well as certain outside activities, such as his involvement with the Sons of the American Revolution.

Series 7 is divided into four subseries: (1) Permanent Faculty; (2) Visiting Faculty; and (3) Faculty Correspondence; and (4) Visiting Faculty Tenure, 1988-1997. Materials in series 1, 2 and 4 concern the appointment, promotion, and tenure of faculty members, and include correspondence and reports of hiring and promotion committees. Subseries 3 contains chronological correspondence files of two faculty members, Joseph T. Singewald and George W. Fisher.

Series 8 contains records of two departmental chairmen, Owen M. Phillips and George Fisher, pertaining to their dealins with various University divisions and committees. Materials in this series include correspondence and memoranda, reports, and some reference materials.

Series 9 contains reports, correspondence, and conference programs documenting contacts between the chairman of the department and individuals outside the University.

Series 10 is divided into four subseries. Subseries 1 and 2, contains Professor Francis J. Pettijohn's professional correspondence. Subseries 3 contains materials compiled by Pettijohn while writing a history of geology at Hopkins. There is only a small amount of material in this subseries, including some correspondence, photocopies from publications, and a few original letters. Subseries 4 consists of subject files which date from 1923 to 1989.

Series 11 consists of grant proposals, reports, and correpondence concerning research projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation, and the Office of Naval Research.

Series 12 contains the individual student files of graduate students in the department. The majority of these files contain an application for admission, fellowship and grant applications, evaluations by professors, and letters of recommendation for future study or employment. In many cases contact was maintained with the student after he or she left the University.
