Abstract:

Correspondence, contracts, programs, printed publicity material, photographs including prints, slides, and negatives, reports, artifacts, and some awards and certificates relating to the output of the department, music directors, and other conductors of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The files of the Artistic Administration director and vice president include correspondence with the orchestra's most recent music directors, Sir Georg Solti and Daniel Barenboim, contemporary artists, conductors, and managers, and correspondence relating to the commissioning of new works. Civic Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, and Education Dept. records all include administrative subject files, programs, publicity, and brochures about the concerts, as well as documentary photographs. The chamber music program files detail the yearly performances of chamber groups, made up of Chicago Symphony Orchestra members, to schools, hospitals, and senior citizen homes. The composer-in-residence files, continuing education files, and ECHO (the Eloise W. Martin Center of the Chicago Symphony Center) files primarily consist of correspondence and planning/project files. Other persons represented include John Corigliano, Carlo Maria Giulini, Margaret Hillis, Irwin Hoffman, Jean Martinon, Shulamit Ran, Frederick August Stock, and Augusta Read Thomas.
