Abstract:

Methods training in the social sciences often prioritizes the scientific merits of quantitative data and emphasizes the necessity of researcher objectivity. By contrast, feminist researchers have argued that the subjectivities of the researcher always infuse their research and are best acknowledged and reflected upon to assess their influence. In this case study, I draw on my experiences interviewing women rape victim/survivors to explore the merits of reflexivity, in particular discussing the transition from "my" project to "theirs." I also reflect upon the role played by emotions and suggest that, far from being the enemy of good research, they can be an asset and enhance the depth of knowledge and understanding attained.
