Abstract:

"Remembering Cable Street presents challenging new research on the 1936 confrontation between the police, fascists and antifascists in London's Jewish neighbourhood, and its impact on British society. The volume examines the political, cultural and social history of Cable Street, with particular attention given to the diversity of Jewish responses in London and Manchester, government reactions, fascist perceptions and representations of Cable Street, the role of gender, and the shifting cultural memory of 'the Battle'. Also included is East End writer Simon Blumenfeld's play The Battle of Cable Street and an extract from its sequel No Pasaran, which considers the changing meanings of Cable Street in the 1990s."--Jacket.

The volume examines the political, cultural and social history of Cable Street, with particular attention given to the diversity of Jewish responses in London and Manchester, government reactions, fascist perceptions and representations of Cable Street, the role of gender, and the shifting cultural memory of \'the Battle\'. Also included is East End writer Simon Blumenfeld\'s play The Battle of Cable Street and an extract from its sequel No Pasaran, which considers the changing meanings of Cable Street in the 1990s."--Jacket." ; .
