Abstract:

Contains essays and diary notes reflecting on the attacks of the French Left against Israel, which was blamed for the massacres of Sabra and Shatila and the Beirut bombings in 1982. According to the new "third-worldist" view, the massacres were a form of imperialist Western violence perpetrated by Israel against an indigenous people. Israel is accused of being both imperialist, i.e. too "Western", and a "theocracy", i.e. not "Western" enough. Responds to charges, inspired by Christians antisemitism, that racism and imperialist superiority are ideas that stem from the notion of Jewish chosenness. Argues that anti-Israeli diatribes and comparisons between Israel and Nazi Germany are not an expression of Europe's bad conscience for the Shoah, but a form of inverted love. The Jews are loved for their suffering in the Shoah, which resembles the agony of Christ, but accused of egoism, racism, colonialism, and imperialism, the worst crimes in left-wing European vocabulary, when they "betray" the image of the victim. Also discusses the Rue de Rosier bombing in Paris in 1982 and memory of the Shoah.
