Abstract:
Our research in based on field studies and excavations I have led as a member of the French Archaeological expedition in Mongolia at the Xiongnu aristocratic graveyard in Gol Mod which yields the most important discoveries in Xiongnu archaeology since 1920's. The graveyard situated in western part of central Mongolia in the Arkhangai Province, belongs to the hugest sites of “the first steppe empire”, supposed to be established by the Xiongnu. Topographic and geophysical surveys, anthropological, archaeolozoological and environmental studies allowed to elaborate a throughout research of the graveyard's organization and to match these date with the information brought by the technical, typological, chronological and contextual analysis of the findings which constitutes the core of the present study. This research helped to describe the main features of the Xiongnu material culture and their funerary rites which had not been studied systematically by the past. This global vision of the Xiongnu society shows especially the important economical and political development in 1st century BC - 2nd century AD.
