Summary:
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of patellar taping in patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) and whether results of this study could replicate the results from past research. Existing data for seven individuals from the database of a physical therapy clinic with the patient identifiers removed was used for this study. The mean age of the group was 29 and the standard deviation was 7.64.  Read more...

Abstract:

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of patellar taping in patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) and whether results of this study could replicate the results from past research. Existing data for seven individuals from the database of a physical therapy clinic with the patient identifiers removed was used for this study. The mean age of the group was 29 and the standard deviation was 7.64. Each patient received patellar taping followed by an exercise protocol three times a week. Pain intensity was measured by VAS scale and functional performance was measured using Lysholm scale. When two tailed, paired t-test was performed, results showed significant improvement (P < 0.01) in pain score and Lyscholm score at the initial evaluation and re-evaluation at the third and sixth weeks. Categorized according to age, significant difference was found between Lyscholm scores at the initial evaluation and re-evaluations. There was a strong correlation (R = -0.53) between the pain and Lyscholm score at the third week evaluation. It was concluded that six weeks of patellar taping and exercise protocol can produce significant improvement in pain and function. The effects of taping can vary with the age and that it cannot be concluded if pain is an indicator of functional performance in PFPS.
