Abstract:

"'Rope Trick' is a small hand-bound book containing a series of layered images of eyes, mouths, fingers, rope and text clippings printed in rich hues of red, green and black. Visceral imagery is paired with textual references to archaic mythology, martyrdom, and rapture, giving the work an undertone of sexuality and violence.

"'Rope Trick' is printed with dark rich shades of color bled together in various combinations. The main-entry words function as half-conscious hypnotic suggestions in the trance-like atmosphere established through repetition and the density of dark tones. Without being overtly stated, themes of violence predominate: a face and eyes dissected fingers literally entwined-mixed with definition of words like 'fetal' and 'whip - suggest a kind of morbid sexuality. Moving through the book, the eye remains central, hinting at a silent somewhat distanced observational stance, making this a book about tortured passion without being directly passionate."
