Abstract:

Abstract: Emergency departments play a vital role in the identification and treatment of HIV. In 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued guidelines, in part, calling for routine HIV screening in emergency departments for individuals aged 13-64, who reside in localities with an HIV prevalence <0.1%. This literature review was designed to assess the availability of routine HIV testing in light of the guidelines, describe barriers, especially among patient and staff attitudes, and to make recommendations for overcoming these barriers. Methods utilized included a retrospective literature search using PubMed and CINHAL Plus. It was observed that emergency departments are engaged in overcoming barriers to testing and that provider and administrator attitudes are key indicators of successful programs.
