Abstract:

"This exhibition explores the range of ways women and men have been represented as specifically female or male in works of art. We consider the issue of gender difference - how women's and men's societal and sexual roles have been depicted in art history. For the most part, the attitudes represented here are so deeply embedded in our cultural history that the 'rules of the game' - how both sexes are pressured to conform to gender stereotypes - are taken for granted or advocated by the artists who made these images."
