Abstract:

Memoirs of a Jewish woman, born in Vilna. In 1939, when Soviet troops occupied the city, Shapiro-Rosenzweig was married and the mother of a little girl. After the confiscation of their apartment the family moved to Ponar, where they witnessed the Nazi invasion and the murder of many Jews. They hid in a monastery for six months and then sought refuge in the ghetto of Vilna. In September 1943 Shapiro-Rosenzweig's husband, Jasha, was arrested and deported. She and her daughter escaped and hid in various places, posing as non-Jews. After 1945 mother and daughter returned to Vilna and learned that Jasha had been murdered in a concentration camp.
