Abstract:

"The publication examines a newly discovered terracotta sculpture of John the Baptist, made in the 1530s by Giovan Angelo Montorsoli, one of Michelangelo's principal followers. Montorsoli produced the work at a key phase in his career--around the time he resored the ancient Apollo Belvedere and Laocoon, and carved the figure of Saint Cosmas for the Medici Chapel. Montorsoli's work thus responds to Michelangelo and the classical post, while reflecting the shifting political conditions in Florence and the Holy Roman Empire. This book highlights the hybridity of Renaissance art, especially its absorption of classical styles and themes into religious images."--from back cover
