Abstract:

Contains correspondence, hand-written notes, flyers, documents, and memoranda concerning the American Arbitration Association (AAA) and its various activities, particularly those in which Cole participated.

Specifically, contains correspondence, copies of research papers, and other documents relating to the American Arbitration Association's Labor Management Institute (1961-1969). Topics include collective bargaining; purposes of the Labor Management Institute; Arden House Conference (1966), including research papers on new methods of collective bargaining; "off the record" meetings between management and labor leaders in the manufacturing sector of the economy; proposals for handling labor disputes in the public sector; use of computers in labor management relations; and replacement of the Labor Management Institute by the Center for Dispute Settlement (1969).

Also includes correspondence, papers, notes, and memoranda concerning various conferences and committees organized by the American Arbitration Association (1958-1971), including the Newspaper Industry Conference, (1963) dealing with new technology and future employment opportunities in the newspaper industry and means of avoiding jurisdictional disputes between unions as a result of technological change; the Labor-Management Manufacturing Sector Conference (1964), dealing with collective bargaining disputes in the construction industry; the American Arbitration Association Executive Committee (1958), including various reports; the AAA Arbitration Law Committee (1957), dealing with arbitration procedures; the Labor Management Advisory Committee (1971), regarding actual and proposed arbitration procedures in a number of industries (including steel, railroad, airline, maritime, and others).

Additionally, includes correspondence, minutes, notes (hand-written and typed), pamphlets, and reports relating to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and American Association for the United Nations, Inc. which Cole chaired. Issues include communist influence in ILO; United States interpretation of ILO's purpose; vocational training in agriculture; welfare facilities for workers; convention on forced labor; weekly rest period in commerce and office work; protection and integration of indigenous peoples (including tribal and semi-tribal peoples); automation; reduction of hours of work; abolition of discrimination based on sex; disarmament; future trends in labor management relations; freedom of association; and alleged infringements of trade union rights in Japan (1956-1957).
