Abstract:

Six set designs in gouache and watercolor and ten costume designs in ink and watercolor for Richard Wagner's opera Parsifal. Although Lefler produced designs for the entire opera for a production at the Vienna Volksoper in January 1914, only the costume designs for the second act (represented in this collection) were used. All of the designs bear captions in pencil or ink, and many are signed by Lefler with a lower-case "l."

The collection is organized in two folders. The first contains six set designs to accommodate all three acts of Parsifal, painted primarily in hues of blue, yellow, and green. The second folder contains ten costume designs, done with intricate detail depicting floral designs and extensive ornament. This group includes a costume for the flower maiden which was realized for the Volksoper production in January 1914.
