Notes: Founded in 1864 as Indianapolis High School, Shortridge was the state's first free high school. Its name was changed to Shortridge in 1898 in honor of Superintendent Abram C. Shortridge who began the school's tradition of excellence. From the 1930s on, Shortridge was affected by the socio-economic changes in the community, leading to its closing in 1981.

Abstract:

The collection is in eight series: 1. Shortridge ECHO files contain faculty, student and alumni records, and community and administrative records. Much information is biographical. Also contained are pamphlets, programs, student lists, 1874-1970, and a list of Kurt Vonnegut's articles in the ECHO. 2. Charity Dye Library files contain Shortridge and alumni memorabilia, student lists, and programs. 3. PTA files include financial and administrative records, and alumni association records. 4. Student Senate records are meeting minutes; topics like women's suffrage and immigration law are debated. 5. GED records mostly deal with students who left school to fight in World War II. 6. Student and alumni records include student publication and organization materials. 7. Architectural drawings are of the building, additions, and grounds. 8. Visual materials include ECHO files and athletic photographs.
