Abstract:

Papers documenting the personal and business life of Sigrid Schultz, an American-born foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune who served as bureau chief in Berlin from 1926 to 1941, and was an author, radio broadcaster, and lecturer. Included also are materials generated by her parents, Hermann and Hedwig Schultz, and by her maternal forebears, the Jaskewitz family.

Extensive incoming and outgoing correspondence includes exchanges between Ms. Schultz and her mother which are almost daily during the late 1930s and early 1940s; letters from colleagues and friends such as Hans von Kaltenborn, Louis Lochner, William Shirer, and Wallace Deuel; and numerous business letters to and from the Tribune's controversial owner, Col. Robert McCormick, and colleagues such Floyd Gibbons, Richard Henry Little, J. Loy Maloney, Joseph Pierson, George Seldes, and George Scharschug.

Writings include microfilmed news stories from the Tribune, 1934-1939; stories mailed to the Tribune, 1920-1941; telegraphed copies of World War II reporting; published and unpublished articles; book reviews; manuscripts of three unpublished books about Germany; a social column about Americans in Germany, 1925-1928; unpublished memoirs; notes; speeches; and diaries. Other professional records document her involvement with the Overseas Press Club. There are also extensive files of writings and other materials collected as a result of her career activities and writing.

The papers of her parents consist of family correspondence, daily logs and diaries, notebooks, and sketch books belonging to her father, a prominent portrait painter. The Jaskewitz family materials include correspondence and papers about their theatrical and musical work in Germany. Photographs in the processed portion of the collection include images of the Schultz family and friends, circa 1890-1976.
