Alwyn Lowe is an early Welch settler pioneer of Ripon, Wisconsin who feels ill at-ease among strangers. Her aunt declares moving to rural 1860's Wisconsin is "the same as giving her a silver key to lock her doors on the outside world forever." She finds someone who opens those doors for her.
