Abstract:

Abstract: A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a distributed wireless network that consists of many wireless autonomous sensing devices which use sensors to collect data and monitor physical environments. WSNs have grown from an upstart technology to having an important role in many technical and scientific fields in our society. In WSNs, there are two types of architectures. One is an ad hoc WSN which is single-layer planar. The other one is a two-tier hierarchical WSN. This paper will introduce both WSN architectures and a discrete-event simulation on both architectures. The simulation compares the power consumption, data latency, and scalability between both WSN architectures. The simulation results indicate that the hierarchical WSN s can reduce the power consumption and data delivery delay of the sensor nodes. The reason hierarchical WSNs have better power consumption is that the power consumption of the cluster heads is not considered in the simulation.
