Abstract:

Peter Hames is an American artist and adventurer living near Monaco after the first World War. He was a dectective with the New York Police department until he was betrayed by his underlings and which resulted in a false conviction. Disilllusioned, but after inheriting a million dollars, he moves to France to become a painter. Sybil Christian is the daughter of an English Lord, ex Actress, and amateur detective. She lives a "double life" as a member of fashionable society, and a denizen of the Demimonde, a cocotte. Peter and Sybil encounter each other at the Cafe Regal over the dead body of a bartender. Together they solve crimes, foil criminals, and generally fall in love.
