Abstract:
Looking at detective novels from around the world, Fischer-Hornung (U. of Heidelberg, Germany) and Mueller (English, U. of Cologne, Germany) define the "ethnic detective" as the protagonist who is not of the dominant group of the society in which the novel is set and note that the majority of these novels are written by individuals who are not of the ethnicity of their protagonist (citing Tony Hillerman as a prominent example). They present 16 papers that explore a range of issues that arise from these works, including such topics as the construction of personal and social identity, genre modification, alienation from "traditional" society, intersections of race and gender, and marketing strategies for ethnic mysteries.
