Abstract:

From his "Institutional history of Virginia in the seventeenth century."

"From the monumental, two-volume Institutional History of Virginia in the Seventeenth Century, written by P.A. Bruce more than half a century ago, we have taken the first two sections, 'Religion and Morals' and 'Education.' They provide students with the fullest possible picture of the religious spirit in Old Virginia, as well as detailed accounts of public morals, parish government, the clergy, non-Anglican groups such as Quakers and Puritans, and atheism and witchcraft. The book also covers public and private education, institutions of higher learning, such as William and Mary College, books and libraries, illiteracy, the sentiment in favor of education, and the general culture of the seventeenth century Virginia. Working from all available firsthand sources, exhibiting a scholarship in this area that has remained unmatched, Bruce has constructed an unusually informative, detailed and comprehensive picture of the institutions of Colonial Virginia before 1700." -- Back cover
