Abstract:

The Social Studio: Art & Community is a book that celebrates Melbourne's multicultural community of artists, foodies and fashionistas through the lens of The Social Studio, a vibrant arts enterprise in Collingwood. The Social Studio was founded in 2009 to create awareness and change public perceptions for people who have experienced being a refugee through a dynamic set of activities across fashion, design, art and hospitality that generate employment and educational pathways. The Studio is a non-profit incorporated association and charity with DGR status. All income generated throughthe Studio is invested into creating social benefits for students, staff and the community around them. The book includes a mix of interviews, recipes, artworks and photographic portraits of more than 50 of Melbourne's diverse artists, designers, stylists and musicians. The project documents and shares the story of The Social Studio since it began its journey in 2009, and charts its impact on Melbourne's artistic and cultural landscape.
