Abstract:

Consists of correspondence and record books for the Brown University Society of Missionary Inquiry (1827-1891). Three record books (1834-1891) contain various versions of the society's constitutions, lists of members, and minutes. The society corresponded with similar groups at other universities and colleges about Christian spiritual life in general and about activities. The Brown University society corresponded with societies at Bowdoin College, Middlebury College, Dartmouth College, Williams College, Madison University (Baptist Institution and Theological Seminary) in Hamilton, N.Y., University of Lewisburg in Pa., Granville College in Ohio, Rochester University, Amherst College, the Newton Tehological Seminary, and with Brown University alumni at the Andover Theological Seminary. The Brown University society corresponded with missionaries in order to invite them to speak at their meetings or to ask advice on becoming missionaries. John Mason Peck, of the American Baptist Publication and Sunday School Society, wrote three lengthy circular letters to the society in 1843 and described the field for missionaries in the states and territories of the Mississippi Valley. Peck describes the opportunities for missionaries in New Orleans, La., and other southern cities and discussed the personal and spiritual qualities that were needed in missionaries.

Peck noted the need for the instruction of slaves in the southwestern states and described a St. Louis Sunday school for slaves that he opened in 1818.
