Professional correspondence of Buck as superintendent of the Minnesota Historical Society (1914-1931); as a history department faculty member at the universities of Indiana (1908-1909), Illinois (1910-1914), Minnesota (1914-1931), and Pittsburgh (1931-1935); and as director of the Western Pennsylvania Historical Survey (1931-1935). Correspondents include other historians, archivists, and historical agency administrators.

There is also information on his professional affiliations, particularly in the Mississippi Valley Historical Association (and its Public Archives Commission), Agricultural Historical Society, Alvord (Clarence W.) Memorial Commission, and the American Council of Learned Societies' and The Social Sciences Research Council's Joint Committee on Materials for Research and the Enlargement, Improvement, and Preservation of Data.

There is much information on his many writings, especially the publication of his books and articles and reviews for such journals as the Mississippi Valley Historical Review and American History Review.
