Abstract:

Discusses aspects of the experiences of those who passed through the Nazi concentration camps, both those who were in charge and their victims. Examines memoirs and confessions of war criminals, and their attempts to justify their acts based on self-deception or the repression of memory. Also discusses the prisoners' behavior, collaboration, survivor guilt, Nazi language, the "useless" or irrational violence of the Nazi regime, and present-day attempts to deny the Holocaust. The final chapter discusses reactions to the German translation, published in 1961, of Levi's book on Auschwitz, "If This Is a Man?", and his rejection of the argument that the German people were misled and unable to protest against persecution of the Jews.
