Abstract:

Abstract: The American composer George Crumb wrote his Sonata for Solo Violoncello while studying in Germany in 1955. He dedicated the piece to his mother. Compared with his later works, this piece employs limited timbral effects. Notable performers of this work include Yo-Yo Ma, Evelyn Elsing, Gordon Epperson, Suren Bagratuni, Colin Carr, and Matt Haimovitz. Their performances and recordings have generated numerous reviews in newspapers such as The New York Times and The Washington Post. Many of these evaluate not only the overall quality of the performance, but also the performer's handling of technical issues. This paper will investigate various performances and recordings to determine whether there is an ideal manner of performing the sonata. There may also be more than one acceptable method of interpreting the piece and, if this is so, each of those performance methods will be explored.
