Abstract:

A study of pagan antisemitism, discussing the connection between theological, social, and racial antisemitism, as well as the birth of central antisemitic myths in the ancient period. On pp. 49-104, presents a selection of anti-Jewish texts written by pagan authors between 300 BCE-300 CE, with accompanying commentary. Alexandrian anti-Judaism is represented by Hecataeus, Manetho, Lysimachus, and Damokritos; Greek cultural imperialism by Posidonius; Roman anti-Judaism by Apion, Seneca, Antonius Julianus, Quintilian, Tacitus, Juvenal, Celsus, Cassius Dio, and Philostratus. Pp. 107-152, by Patrick Sultan, contain John Chrysostom's eight anti-Jewish homilies, delivered in 386-387. They show that anti-Jewish pagan sources were incorporated into Christianity by the Church Fathers.
