Abstract:

Two of the most resounding victories of English arms--Cressy and Poitiers--occurred at the beginning of the Hundred Years War with France. The first was under the leadership of Edward III; the second, under that of Edward, the Black Prince of Wales. The boy-hero of this tale is Walter Somers, a foundling who is reared by a blacksmith who also teaches him the use of a sword. Tall, strong, skilled, and brave, Walter meets the Prince of Wales and joins the invasion of Brittany and Flanders. Walter survives the Black Death and the Battle of Poitiers, and marries the girl he saved from pirates.
