Abstract:

Describes Jewish historical monuments, such as synagogues, ritual baths, cemeteries, school buildings, and "Judengassen" (Jewish streets) - the remains of Jewish communities in Bavaria. The book is organized alphabetically, with short entries for each town. Jews settled in the area during the Middle Ages (ca. 10th-11th centuries). Although they often paid protection money, they suffered from pogroms (e.g. the 1298 "Rindfleisch" pogroms), the Deggendorf and Straubing persecution in 1338, and expulsions in the 16th century. They returned in the 18th century, and acquired civil rights in the 19th century. During the "Kristallnacht" pogrom many synagogues were burnt.
