Notes: There are many different defense mechanisms that a person can use to avoid difficult or painful situations and experiences. Defense mechanisms also play a part in the origins and maintenance of addiction. Admitting to a drug or alcohol problem is a key step on the road to overcoming addiction. For some, it can be the hardest part of the process, as it involves breaking down barriers that have been set up deep in the unconscious mind.

Even though it processes toxin substances as part of its function, the liver can be damaged by alcohol and other drugs that interface with its ability to eliminate them. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism is one of the centers that are part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIAAA supports most of the research conducted on alcohol abuse in the United States.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is one of the institutes and centers that are part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIDA supports more than 85 percent of the world's research on drug addiction. The reward system of the brain evolved to provide a pleasurable sensation for maintaining vital functions such as eating, drinking, and sex. This system is also triggered by drugs and plays a key part in the process of addiction.
It is hard to say exactly what makes an adolescent vulnerable to the influence of drugs. Researchers are discovering that a wide mix of biological, sociological, and enviromental factors may all play a part in the addiction process.
