Abstract:

The circumscription of the genus Hintonia Bullock and its species was revised based on herbarium specimens and field observations. Hintonia is composed of three species of relatively small trees endemic to Mexico and Central America (from Sonora to Costa Rica). It can be distinguished from the rest of the Rubiaceae by having a unique combination of characters that includes: solitary, axillary, infundibuliform, hexamerous or octomerous flowers; stamens fused at the based of the corolla; cylindrical, capsular fruits; about 50 winged seeds per locule, basipetally imbricated. Hintonia latiflora (DC) Bullock grows from Sonora to Guatemala, in tropical drought-deciduous forest or scrub or thorn forest, mainly in the Pacific Slope of the Sierra Madre Occidental and adjacent canyons. Hintonia lunana (Baillon) Bullock grows from Veracruz to Costa Rica in tropical and montane rain forests. Hintonia octomera (Hemsley) Bullock grows in the Yucatan Peninsula and in Guatemala in tropical ombrophilous forest and coastal dunes.

The phylogenetic position of the genus Hintonia within Rubiaceae was evaluated with parsimony cladistic analysis of chloroplast DNA (rbcL and rps16) including as many as 145 Rubiaceae terminals. The genus is supported as part of the Portlandia complex, within the tribe Catesbaeeae. This tribe, sensu Delprete, is paraphyletic according to the DNA analyses. In order to be monophyletic, it should include the members of the Exostema group and the tribe Chiococceae.

The monophyly of the genus and the phylogenetic relationships of the related taxa belonging in the Portlandia complex (46 terminals) were examined using parsimony cladistic analyses of 51 morphological characters. The genus was supported as monophyletic in all the most parsimonious trees, as were Bikkia, Coutarea, and Cubanola . The tribe Catesbaeeae sensu Delprete, Badusa, Exostema, and Portlandia are monophyletic in only some of the most parsimonious trees. The strict consensus of the most parsimonious trees suggests it is necessary to reconsider the circumscription of either the Catesbaeeae sensu Delprete or the Chiococceae, but this is ambiguous due to the lack of resolution.
