Against a backdrop of fake news and other controversies surrounding online political debate, the authors focus on inadvertent acts of offence on Facebook; that is, when users of the site unwittingly offend or are offended by the airing of political or religious views, or of opinions deemed racist or sexist. Drawing on a survey of Facebook users, they explain why instances of offence occur and what users report doing in response. They argue that Facebook users contribute to the construction of a particular social space, one that is characterised by online conviviality and a belief that Facebook is not the place for serious debate. These views in turn shape the kind of political debate that can take place on the site. This thought-provoking book will appeal to scholars and students of applied linguistics, and anyone interested in the role of social media in contemporary political and social life."@en ;
schema:description "Creating Facebook: A Study of Online Conflict and Conviviality -- Online Communication as a Context Design -- Giving and Taking Offence: Theoretical and Empirical Approaches -- Social Media and Intradiverse Networks -- The Impact of Intradiversity on Online Offence -- Constructing Conviviality in Online Interaction -- Afterword: Beyond Facebook."@en ;
schema:exampleOfWork <http://worldcat.org/entity/work/id/4138558734> ;
schema:genre "Electronic books"@en ;
schema:inLanguage "en" ;
schema:isPartOf <http://experiment.worldcat.org/entity/work/data/4138558734#Series/palgrave_pivot> ; # Palgrave pivot.

schema:isSimilarTo <http://worldcat.org/entity/work/data/4138558734#CreativeWork/taking_offence_on_social_media_conviviality_and_communication_on_facebook> ;
schema:name "Taking offence on social media : conviviality and communication on Facebook"@en ;
schema:productID "1000451960" ;
schema:url <https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007%2F978-3-319-56717-4> ;
schema:url <https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=1570672> ;
schema:url <http://public.ebookcentral.proquest.com.catalogue.libraries.london.ac.uk/lib/ulondon/detail.action?p=4939334> ;
schema:url <http://www.vlebooks.com/vleweb/product/openreader?id=none&isbn=9783319567174> ;
schema:url <http://VH7QX3XE2P.search.serialssolutions.com/?V=1.0&L=VH7QX3XE2P&S=AC_T_B&C=Taking%20Offence%20on%20Social%20Media&T=marc&tab=BOOKS> ;
schema:url <https://public.ebookcentral.proquest.com/choice/publicfullrecord.aspx?p=4939334> ;
schema:url <https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-56717-4> ;
schema:url <http://rave.ohiolink.edu/ebooks/ebc/9783319567174> ;
schema:url <https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007%2F978-3-319-56716-7> ;
schema:workExample <http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-56717-4> ;
schema:workExample <http://worldcat.org/isbn/9783319567174> ;
wdrs:describedby <http://www.worldcat.org/title/-/oclc/1000451960> ;    .
