Abstract:

In this novel one of our finest writers of the West tells of the emergence of human understanding in a man dedicated to vengeance. Based historically on the border incidents which flared between Texas and Mexico in the late nineteenth century, Mr. Locke's tale is outwardly that of a man, solitary and inarticulate, who goes into Mexico to avenge the murder of his brother and the loss of his stock and ranch. But this is more than a novel of high adventure and violence; it is the story of John Killane's dicovery that revenge is bitter, spreading to the touch and destroy the innocent as well as the guilty. It is the story of a man who learns to regret a great mistake and accept responsibility for it, and who learns, under the deepening spell of the color and warmth of Mexico, to move from isolation toward love and hope. Yet Mr. Locke unfolds his tale through a series of events which are action at its purest, swift and space and disciplined, rising to a climax in one of the most gripping scenes of pursuit in recent fiction -- Book jacket.
