Abstract:

The Urbilateria, the last common ancestors of all living bilaterians, are generally reconstructed as metazoans with a remarkable degree of morphological complexity, but the current view of the acoel flatworms as the most basally branching group of the Bilateria suggests an alternative model of the Urbilateria, broadly comparable to a cnidarian planula larva. With the exception of acoels and nemertodermatids, the bilaterians form the large clade Nephrozoa, within which the traditional distinction between Protostomia and Deuterostomia is supported by molecular phylogenetic analyses. However, within each of these two major clades, new vistas have been opened during the last two decades. The 26 phylogenetic hypotheses discussed in this chapter include the Ecdysozoa, a clade of moulting animals proposed to include the Panarthropoda (Arthropoda plus Onychophora and Tardigrada), together with the Nematoda and other unsegmented metazoans, while the Annelida group together with Mollusca, Nemertea, and Phoronozoa in a clade Lophotrochozoa.
