Abstract:

Memoirs of two Jewish women - Federica Spitzer, born in 1911 in Vienna (p. 9-97), and Ruth Weisz, born in 1922 in Goeding, Moravia (p. 98-157) - on their internment in Theresienstadt. Federica and her parents arrived in Theresienstadt in October 1942, suffered from starvation and epidemics, and narrowly escaped deportation to an extermination camp. Weisz and her family moved to Prague in 1938; from there they were deported to Theresienstadt in 1943, and she was sent to Auschwitz in 1944. The essay by Wolfgang Benz (p. 158-171), "Theresienstadt: Ort der deutschen Geschichte", deals with the role and function of Theresienstadt as a concentration camp.
