Abstract:

The pioneer fighter pilots of World War I helped pave the way not only for the age of military aviation, but also for the later peacetime mastery of the air. Few of these pilots earned greater glory than the American volunteers who flew for France in the Lafayette Flying Corps. Here is the fast-paced, easy-to-read account of the Corps, written by a man who himself served as a pilot in the First World War. Drawing on his own experience, Mr. Bowen vividly describes the planes of the era, which they were flown, and weapons with which they were equipped. He brings to life for today's young readers the personalities of some of the outstanding aces of the Corps, and the qualities of courage and daring which they displayed in combat. He also frankly relates the many frustrations and disappointments the Corps encountered from politicians and military men who were too short-sighted to grasp the significance of airplanes in modern warfare. Filled with action, excitement, and sometimes tragedy, They Flew to Glory will appeal to all young people who are interested in books about airplanes and the men who flew them.--Jacket.
