Abstract:

The collection contains five letters. Campbell writes to Messrs. Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 19 Feb. 1817, in the third person, saying he is unable to attend a reception; to C. [Charles] Heath, undated [ca. 1820], in the third person, asking for engravings for the forthcoming edition of Gertrude of Wyoming; to My dear Sir, 26 May 1829, introducing a French actor and author of a very respectable tragedy; to My dear [William] Jerdan, editor of the Literary gazette, 9 Jan. 1830, regretting the death of [Sir Thomas] Lawrence and recommending [Henry William] Pickersgill as his successor as president of the Royal Academy; and to Lord Brougham, undated [1843], explaining why he is publishing his own poems. Four of the letters are on integral envelopes, some with wax seals.

The collection also contains a manuscript poem of Adelgitha, dated 12 Mar. 1832, and a portrait of Campbell engraved by H.W. Smith, Sc., undated.
