Abstract:

A lecture delivered at Indiana University, October 1986. Discusses the controversy surrounding Rainer Werner Fassbinder's play "Garbage, the City and Death" in the context of the ongoing public debate about Nazism, German guilt, and antisemitism - issues which the Germans thought they had "worked through". Concludes that there is a growing preference on the part of most Germans to return to normalcy, to forget the Nazi past and its atrocities, and to emphasize the more positive aspects of German history. States, however, that reconciliation can never come about through forgetfulness.
