Abstract:

A maquette (i.e. usually a small model of an intended work such as a sculpture) commissioned by the National Capital Development Commission and created by Len Shillam. "Threshold" depicts a reclining figure designed to appear from a distance like one of the rocky outcrops of the Canberra region. The artist's objective was to create a sculpture that would fit the modern style of contemporary Canberra architecture. The actual sandstone sculpture took four months to complete and weighs three and a half tons. It was installed at the Constitution Avenue entrance of the Canberra Technical College in 1966.
