Abstract:

This book uses the Baltimore City Tax Assessor's Ledger, 1813, and the ledgers for 1818, which the authors researched in their original format at the Baltimore City Archives. They have supplemented this material with data from city directories, census records, and books and journal articles about nineteenth century Baltimore and Maryland. Though they note that there are inconsistencies and discrepancies, many due to phonetic spelling or indecipherable handwriting, their intent was to present the data exactly as written. -- Adapted from Introduction (page 4).
