Abstract:

There have been many studies of Toscanini, the man. This book turns to the central questions of Toscanini as a musician and special character of the Toscanini performance. Writing lucidly and knowledgeably, the distinguished music critic of the Chicago Sun-Times defines those powers of mind and musicianship which set Toscanini apart from other conductors of our time and which, for millions of listeners, gave his interpretations the quality of revelation. Mr Marsh surveys the recordings that preserve Toscanini's achievement, with critiques of their significance, along with a chronological list of those still available. A brief sketch of his life rounds out this comprehensive picture of the Maestro who is idolized, quarrelled over, but generally acknowledged to be one of the most illustrious and widely influential conductors in history. -- Publisher description.
