Abstract:

In the Andes, the Spanish opened up the largest silver mine in the world and minted millions of pesos de ocho (pieces of eight). This documentary examines how these coins became a global currency--setting the stage for modern globalization. Francis Drake stole silver from Spanish galleons, contributing to Europe's economic boom. In Amsterdam, Dutch investors created the first futures market of tulip bulbs. Pilgrim settlers survived in New England thanks to Wabanaki guide Squanto. Queen Nzinga fought to protect the Ndongo from being enslaved by Portuguese merchants seeking labor to work on New World sugar cane plantations. Mogul emperor Shah Jahan's enormous wealth stemmed from trade with Europe--visible in the Taj Mahal monument to his favorite wife.
