Abstract:

Describes the hardships encountered by Holocaust survivors, reasons for the rise in antisemitism after 1945, and the pogroms of 1946. After the communist takeover, antisemitism and the Holocaust became taboo; the goal of the regime was assimilation. Jews suffered from expropriation and transfer from the capital to rural districts. There were many Jews among the accused at show trials staged by the new regime. Jews were stigmatized for not being working class. They could not regain their previous economic positions, but the regime offered new possibilities. They could join the party, the AVO (State Security Authority), or become civil servants. Hungarian Jews who returned from the USSR in 1945 became leaders in the new regime. Following Stalin's orders, they organized a trial against Jews which was forestalled by Stalin's death. The secularization of education, social restructuring, and more equal life-styles all helped to decrease antisemitism. As a result, during the 1956 revolution there were almost no antisemitic incidents.
