Abstract:

Memoirs of a Polish Jew born in 1924 in the town of Końskie, where there were ca. 6,000 Jews, half of the town's population. Describes her family's life in the ghetto, which she left just before its liquidation in November 1942, with her step-mother and step-sister. They bought "Aryan" papers, but Zawadzka lost them in difficult circumstances. She had obtained the address of a Polish woman in Starachowice, Olga Słowik, to whom she fled. She lived with Słowik until the end of the war, and participated in the partisan struggle against the Nazis. Her step-mother and step-sister also survived the war. Her father died in the ghetto and her brother survived in the USSR. Zawadzka decided to remain in Poland, but after the 1968 antisemitic campaign she left and settled with her son in the U.S.
