Denis Matsuev joins the Münchner Philharmoniker and its Music Director Valery Gergiev for a concert of music by Shchedrin, Strauss, and Beethoven in Munich's Gasteig Strauss' Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, Op. 28 (Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks), composed between 1894 and 1895, is first on the program. It narrates the misadventures and pranks of Till Eulenspiegel. Next, the great Russian virtuoso pianist Denis Matsuev, joins the Münchner Philharmoniker to perform Shchedrin's Piano Concerto No. 2, a work often conducted by Gergiev, who has been the orchestra's Principal Conductor since 2015 in addition to his position as Music Director of the Mariinsky Orchestra. The orchestra closes the evening with Beethoven's immortal Symphony No. 3, "Eroica" (1805). Beethoven initially dedicated the symphony to Napoleon Bonaparte, but when the latter the composer's revolutionary ideals by having himself crowned emperor, Beethoven crossed out the French general's name and replaced it with the words, "A heroic symphony composed to celebrate the memory of a great man." .
