Abstract:

My research question was: How does national versus regional society and celebrity coverage differ specifically in depictions of food, wine and entertaining? The goal of my research was to provide the industry with information on regional and national celebrity coverage. I believe that seeing repeated themes, images and text shows how these departments could improve or be varied in the future. I wanted to know if these sections were providing any reader service or if they were merely for aspirational purposes. Through my textual and visual analysis of their front-of-book departments, I found that they are more similar than different. They are comparable in terms of the prevalence of wine versus food, how chefs or caterers are always mentioned, and the parallel formatting in their questionnaire sections: Vanity Fair's "My Stuff" and Santa Barbara Magazine's "SB Buzz." The main difference lies in their editorial tone or voice. Vanity Fair chooses to be exclusive using words such as "my," "elite," "private" and "intimate" that distance the reader; whereas, Santa Barbara Magazine uses inclusive language such as "welcome," "your," "greet" and "enjoy" that invites the reader to the party. Essentially, Vanity Fair keeps its reader behind the velvet rope; Santa Barbara Magazine lifts the rope and welcomes the reader into that world.
